C.I.S. Cup Final 2nd
Feb 2008
Crusaders v Linfield
A smash and grab act by ace predator Glenn
Ferguson saw Linfield take this seasons CIS Cup in the closing moments of an
enthralling Final.
The first half saw both teams weigh each other up in readiness for a
blockbuster second period. In the first half Linfield had plenty of
possession but the Crusaders defence admirably marshalled by Captain Colin
Coates and Gary Smyth snuffed out any threat from the Linfield strike force.
It was the Crues who were first to threaten with Brown's parting shot
whistling past the upright, Crues then forced a couple of corners which
proved fruitless. At the other end Curran had a shot deflected and Thompson
brought the best out of Kerr when the Crues keeper tipped over his powerful
header., a couple of minutes before half time Thompson had another effort
which clipped the crossbar.
Half time Crusaders 0
- 0 Linfield
The second half opened in explosive fashion when Thompson after 30 seconds
hammered the ball past Kerr to put the Blues one up, but the Windsor
faithful perhaps thought the floodgates would open were quickly brought back
to earth when eight minutes later Crues ace predator Davy Rainey capitalised
on Mannus's block from Brown fell into his path and he gratefully whacked
home from close range. Crusaders were now calling the tune not giving
Linfield time to dwell and with the introduction of McAllister for Emerson
the game took on a new meaning Rainey then broke down the left and shot when
perhaps a cross to the unmarked Brown could have been more beneficial. Brown
who was making the home defence work overtime then put the rampant Crues in
front when he drilled home in the 77th minute. Linfield now with Ferguson on
stared to push forward more but a resolute Crues defence ably dealt with any
threat until the 86th minute when Ferguson rose to head home an equaliser
and a sucker punch with one minute to go again by Ferguson gave victory to
the Blues which in reality on the second half performance by the Crues was
extremely harsh. However the team can take great heart from a sterling
performance against what is perhaps the best team in the League at present.
