Dungannon v Crusaders Sat. 13th October 2007
Could there be as much excitement as there was down at Portadown in the CIS quarter final? Probably not but the end of this one wasn't too shabby. Crusaders made a reasonably positive start with Davy Rainey having a long range shot that the 'keeper easily scooped up. Both teams had trouble turning midfield possession into good chances. On the quarter hour Rainey headed on a ball to Ryan Tumelty but his snap shot went just over the bar. Darren Lockhart took a deep free kick and Gary Smyth saw his header drift just wide. Dungannon had a fair deal of the ball too and themselves created some chances. A tame shot by McCaffrey was easily held by Gregg Shannon. With 5 minutes to go to the break Baron for Dungannon worked himself well into the box but his shot was hit over. Last action of the first half was a long cross by Smyth which bounced and was met by Steven Coulter but again his header went just over. Half time Dungannon 0 - 0 Crusaders Declan Caddell replaced Alain Emerson at the resumption. Dungannon had the first chance of the half when they had a shot just wide. Tumelty broke free near the Dungannon box but saw his shot run agonisingly across the face of the goal. On the hour Martin Reilly came on the replace Aaron Montgomery. The 68th minutes saw the most controversial incident. Tumelty made a good run into the box and appeared to be brought down. During the protests Dungannon broke up the other end and a cross fro wide right was tapped into the net by Dungannon sub McAllister. A minute is a long time in football to paraphrase a well known expression. As is Crusaders wont going behind seemed to be a spur and they created more good chances. A long throw in by Smyth caused confusion in the Dungannon box and shots from close range by Reilly and Rainey were both blocked. Lockhart had possession wide right and his long "shot" went just over the bar. In the last minute of regulation time a Lockhart free kick on the left was floated into the box and Smyth saw his header again fly just over. Just as it was looking like an undeserved defeat Lockhart headed a ball across the box and on fire Davy Rainey met it with a spectacular overhead kick to beat the Dungannon 'keeper and secure a point for the Hatchetmen. If only the Latvian hat had been worn who knows what might have been.
