REPORTS 2007/2008

Glenavon v Crusaders

JJB Sports Premiership

Saturday 1st November 2008

To use the old cliché ....It was a game of two halves. Crusaders made a good start pressurising Glenavon from the whistle. The Crues created good chances firstly Martin Donnelly nodded the ball on Stephen McBride who crossed to Steven Coulter who headed well but Murphy in the Glenavon goal didn't have to move to make the save. Donnelly made one of many fine runs down the left and crossed to find Eamon Doherty in front of goal but his shot was again straight at the keeper. Glenavon's only attempt in the first 20 minutes was a shot from distance which Chris Keenan easily dealt with. The pressure from Crusaders didn't let up with Davy Rainey making good progress down the left and sliding in a good ball for Donnelly but his shot didn't test the Glenavon keeper. Crusaders were awarded a penalty on the advice of the linesman following a foul on Aaron Black. Mark Dickson stepped up to the spot and made no mistake. Just before the break Doherty had a shot from 25 yards but it went wide with the keeper beaten.

Half Time Glenavon 0 - 1 Crusaders

Crusaders started the second half in the same positive fashion they finished the first. Coulter met another long Gareth McKeown throw in but his header yet again flew straight at the keeper. As the second half went on Glenavon started to get more and more possession. They took a free kick on the right and as it came into the box it was headed down but Keenan made a good save low near the post. The Glenavon possession eventually paid off when a Colin Coated clearing header was picked up by Glenavon skipper Hugh Dickson who powered into the box and blasted past Keenan giving him no chance. Glenavon could have taken the lead when a shot beat Keenan buy Davy Magowan cleared the goal bound attempt. Crusaders missed chances late on to take all 3 points when Murphy in the Glenavon goal thwarted attempts from Dickson and Rainey. So although the Crues left Mourneview with only a point it was enough to see them go back to the top of the premiership.
