Glenavon v Crusaders
25th March 2008
This was as good a performance by a
Crusaders team in quite some time. They controlled proceedings from
start to finish. The first chance came as early as the 3rd minute when
Davy Rainey found Darren Lockhart out wide. He crossed in to the middle
but Chris Morrow wasn't able to keep his attempt down. Morrow had
another chance shortly afterwards when he beat the offside trap but a
timely tackle prevented his shot from troubling the keeper. The
resulting corner was floated into the middle and Colin Coates saw a
powerful header go just wide. Stephen McBride tried to get in on the
action when he shot from distance and produced a great save low down by
the Glenavon keeper. This was only one of many fine saves by him on a
day when only for him the score could have been embarrassing. After 29
minutes Rainey chased down a seemingly lost cause to the goal line and
pulled the ball back to Lockhart on the penalty spot who made no mistake
to slot the ball side footed past the dive of the keeper. The Lurgan
Blues keeper again made a fine save to deny Steven Coulter who had
broken free and was one on one. Tony Gorman, who was having a fine game
running the midfield, found Morrow with one of many pinpoint passes but
he again saw his attempt go over the bar. Remarkably the half time score
could have been level only Glenavon squandered a chance in the last
minute of the first half. After a scramble in the Crusaders 6 yard area
the ball fell to a Glenavon striker who blasted over when it was easier
to hit the target.

Glenavon started the second half playing
better than they had in the first enjoying more possession. Rainey
settled any nerves Crues fans may have felt when, on the hour mark, he
met a McBride cross to head into the net. By now Crusaders were in total
control and they increased their lead to 3 when substitute Jordan Owens
continued his good recent goal scoring record by powering a header in
from a Morrow cross. With 3 minutes remaining Owens increased his tally
to 2 in scoring a fine individual goal. He received the ball wide on the
right and beat a defender to work his way into the box. He kept his head
to slot the ball past the advancing keeper. The Crues had got a well
deserved win and in the process had scored 4 goals for the 3rd time in 5
matches.
