Glentoran v Crusaders 15th December 2007

A frustrating day all round. For large periods we controlled the game but walked away from The Oval wondering how we had been beaten by 3 goals. The first meaningful attack of the match after just over 10 minutes led to the Glens' first goal. Gary Hamilton drove the ball hard across the box from the left. Crues 'keeper Aaron Kerr was only able to parry the ball into the path of Fordyce who found the back of the net with the rebound. Glentoran rode their luck when a Davy Rainey shot was deflected onto the bar. Crusaders now saw more possession and were looking the better team. Crusaders again let the Glens off the hook again when the ball bobbled in front of the Glens goal but the Crues were too polite with two players leaving it to each other and ended up with nobody hitting it. Eamon McAllister, who was having a fine game wide, found Rainey who showed a great touch to get past the Glentoran midfielder but he saw his shot go just wide. Rainey again was unlucky when a shot from the left rebounded off the left upright.  Hamilton was put free and as he was heading towards the 'keeper Davy Magowan slid in with a perfectly timed tackle to dispossess him and knock the ball out for a throw in. Half time arrived and Crusaders unluckily went in one down.

Half time Glentoran 1 - 0 Crusaders

The second half resumed and in fairness it took off where the first half left off with Crusaders playing well but not able to put away chances. Martin Reilly had a good chance when he worked his way to get one on one with Glens 'keeper Elliott Morris. He had a good chance but Morris blocked the shot with his legs. Rainey nearly set up Darren Lockhart with a decent chance when he whipped a good cross which was just nipped away from Lockhart's head. Another slice of luck for the Glens came when the ball bounced about in front of their goal like a pinball machine with Crusaders having 2 or 3 attempts blocked. You got to reckon it isn't going to be your day when after missing good chances the Glentoran lead gets doubled when a Hamilton cross is backheeled into the roof of the net by Halliday. Glentoran would have extended their lead even more only for a great save by Kerr. The lead was soon 3 when a Glentoran corner fell into the 6 yard box and was poked home by Hamilton. Crusaders nearly got a consolation goal at the end when a McAllister cross was headed just over his own bar by a Glens defender.

So Crusaders inability to stick the ball in the net is again costly.
