Institute v Crusaders 10/11/07

Very much a case of after the Lord Mayor's Show.....

The first real action in this one came in the 8th minute in the shape of Institute's first goal. A break down the left led to a cross which was hit in at close range. Definitely not the start the Crues were looking for. By now all thoughts of C.I.S. were well and truly out the window. Neither team made the most of midfield possession but halfway through the first half Institute were awarded a corner. Unfortunately for Crusaders the corner was swung in and was met unhindered and headed in at the near post. Steven Coulter had a chance to equalize shortly afterwards, when the referee allowed advantage when Coulter was held back but shrugged off the challenge to end up with only the 'keeper to beat. To Crues' dismay his shot was sent wide of the post. Darren Lockhart just wasn't tall enough to get his head on a good free kick from the left from Stephen McBride. Institute made a few decent attacks and were unlucky to see one attempt crash off the upright and to safety. Alain Emerson put Davy Rainey through on the left and did well to find space and send in a great cross which Lockhart couldn't reach but it fell to Chris Morrow who's shot was blocked away for a corner. Crusaders saw the chance of a lifeline back into the game when McBride was brought down in the box. Rainey took the spot kick only to see it saved by the Institute 'keeper. The ball bounced back out and Rainey pounced to 'tap' the ball onto the top road.

Half time Institute 2 - 0 Crusaders

The a second half started more brightly for Crusaders and 10 minutes into the half we were awarded a free kick out on the left. Colin Coates a first half sub swung and caught it on the volley and it flew into the Institute net. This seemed to spur Institute into more resolve and soon after had two good chances to extend their lead. Crusaders had Aaron Hogg to thank for saving the first one with a great save from a powerful shot low to his right. Mr Woodwork (who was having a great game) saved Crues blushes again when a rasping shot blasted off the crossbar. Although not having the best of the play Crues had another good chance when Rainey on the Rainey floated in a cross for McBride who squared the ball to Emerson who put his shot wide. The writing was on the wall with 15 minutes to go when Institute made it 3 with another close range effort from a cross from the left. A bit of pushing and shoving saw Colin Coates see a red card. With only a few minutes 'keeper Aaron Hogg made yet another smashing save from close range. The whistle went shortly after and Institute left the field deserved winners.
