Larne v Crusaders 27th October 2007

What a difference a week makes. Crusaders never looked like losing this one at any stage. Crusaders started the first half playing with the 'slope' and they started brightly but it was Larne who got the first corner. From that corner the ball broke down the Crues left and was picked up by Davy Rainey who lobbed the advancing 'keeper. It looked to be going in but it rolled just a whisker past the far post. Crusaders had plenty of possession and a nice ball into the box from Martin Reilly just wouldn't fall for Darren Lockhart. The ball was cleared as far as Chris Morrow who had a god shot blocked. With five minutes of the first half remaining Rainey was brought down outside the box. Morrow teed up the free and struck it beautifully into the top corner giving the Larne 'keeper no chance. This proved to be the turning point and to be honest from then on, apart from short spells, Crusaders had the match well under control. In injury time Reilly made a good run to the edge of the box but was forced wide. He took the ball to the by-line, looked up and picked out Rainey with a pin point cross who headed the ball home from close range. This goal saw Rainey join a certain gentleman from the 'East' at the top of the goal scorers league.

Half time Larne 0 - 2 Crusaders

Before the queue had cleared from the burger van Larne were awarded a penalty. It was hard to see who was adjudged to have committed the foul as my view was blocked by Natasha Brown's huge grey cap. Larne must have thought it wasn't going to be their day when Crues 'keeper Aaron Hogg saved the penalty. From then on Crusaders put Larne to the sword producing plenty of good goal scoring opportunities without being able to put them away. Both Rainey and Reilly got themselves into one on one's with the Larne 'keeper but he produced good saves to deny them. Larne didn't stretch Crues 'keeper Hogg and he easily dealt with the few crosses that were hit in. Despite all their chances Crusaders had to wait until injury time to add to their goal tally. It was the two Crues substitutes who combined for the Crues third goal with Ryan Tumelty crossing well from the right and Eamonn McAllister meeting the ball well on the half volley to knock it home much to delight of his number one fan Claire Davison. The whistle blew soon afterwards and the Crues bagged three well deserved points in a game they looked very comfortable in. S.E.C. treasurer Jacqueline McKittrick said it was a "perfect early birthday present". She well be ?? years old (answers on a postcard to the editor)
