Crusaders v Donegal Celtic Sat
3rd Nov 2007
Coming to Seaview on the back of a good
result the previous week against Glentoran Celtic hoped to capitalise on the
Crues defeat midweek in the Co Antrim Shield Final, but in the ninth meeting
of the Clubs went home disappointed.
Donegal Celtic with three ex- Crues players in the starting line up started
off brightly and Anto Crawford had a couple of good efforts just wide, and
the lively forward line with McVeigh in form tested the home defence in the
opening fifteen minutes. Gradually the Crues found their way and Martin
Reilly had a great chance to put them ahead but the ball bobbled just before
he struck it and the chance went wide. After 25 Minutes Rainey brought the
best out of keeper Brown and ten minutes later Emerson got on the end of a
shot which just flew past. It was now all Crusaders and Darren Lockhart who
was having a majestic game brought a great save from Brown once again. Chris
Morrow then tried his luck and two efforts one flew over and the other was
cleared off the line by Bonner.
Half time
Crusaders 0 - 0 Donegal Celtic
The second half started with Celtic making two substitutions who looked
certainly more purposeful, and forced a number of corners without really
troubling Brown. Gradually you could see the Crues taking something from
this game, and it was hesitancy in the Celtic defence which allowed Rainey
to score number thirteen of the season from close range with a header. The
game was signed sealed and delivered when Emerson set up Morrow who sent in
a tremendous shot from 22 yards which gave Brown absolutely no chance.
A good victory over a side which have had some good results over the past
few weeks and a base to build on for pushing up the League table. this game
saw the return to first team action for Gareth Walsh after his serious ankle
beak last year in August.
