Crusaders v Coleraine 24th November 2007

What a rollercoaster of a day this was. The first 20 minutes didn't give any indication of the excitement that was to follow. In fairness Crusaders probably had marginally more possession in this period but good chances were at a premium. The closest Crusaders got to a goal was when Darren Lockhart got onto the end of a Chris Morrow free kick but headed just over. As the half progressed Coleraine came more and more into and on the half hour they had a powerful goal bound shot deflected for a corner. From the resulting corner came the opening goal. It was hit in with pace and was headed in near the far post unchallenged. Within 5 minutes the lead had doubled when a cracking shot from the left corner of the box flew into the top corner despite Aaron Hogg's best efforts to stop it. So a four minute spell meant the second half was going to be a struggle to get anything out of the game.

Half time Crusaders 0 - 2 Coleraine

Manager Stephen Baxter made a change at half time in a bid to get back into the match when Martin Reilly replaced Steven Coulter. Whatever was said at half time seemed to have an effect as Crusaders looked much more lively. Lockhart came close with a powerful long range shot but was brilliantly denied low to his right post by the Coleraine 'keeper. After just over an hour Davy Rainey was fouled just outside the Coleraine box. Gary Smyth stepped and struck a sweet free kick past the diving 'keeper to reduce the arrears to one. The Crues were having a good spell now and a free kick out on the left was knocked across the box and met by Reilly but his shot was blocked away. Another corner was the cause of the lead being increased to 2 again. It was hit in and bounced right across the face of the goal where it was headed in at the far post. 3-1 down and 12 minutes to go, is not the best scenario but Crusaders seem to at their best when up against it. A long ball played up into the box was dropped by the Coleraine 'keeper and cleared out as far as Eamonn Doherty who kept his head and placed a shot side footed from the edge of the box to pull one back. Four minutes later a great move by the Crues made the score all square. Rainey headed the ball on to Reilly who put Lockhart through to slip it past the 'keeper and the comeback was complete. In injury time more agony for Crues fans. A Coleraine attacker was allowed to get free one on one with Hogg and he made no mistake blasted the ball past him. Even at this stage Crues nearly pulled level again when Rainey from an acute angle was only able to hit the side netting. A great game for the neutral but hard to take when you do so well to comeback from 2 goals down.
