Crusaders v Limavady Saturday 19th April 2008
Another 3 points in the bag and a push for a top 6 place. That said this one had all the hallmarks of an end of season affair. The first chance fell early to Chris Morrow who headed straight at Millar in the Limavady goal. After 12 minutes Crusaders went a goal down when Brown received the ball 22 yards out and a fine strike beat Aaron Kerr on his left. Limavady were good value for their lead and were well on top at this stage with most of the play taking place deep in the Crues half. Midway through the half Morrow chipped a ball across the Limavady box to pick out Davy Rainey. He went past the advancing keeper and tucked it away from a very tight angle. Limavady seemed now to be struggling with the strong wind that was blowing in their backs as a lot of their attacks ended with the final pass going long. Proof of the strength of the wind was evident when a Crusaders corner fell for Colin Coates and his high shot couldn't even make it as far as the goal line. On the stroke of half time Rainey doubled his tally for the day to give Crusaders the lead. He picked up the ball out on the right and made a mazy run across the front of the box. He produced a good low shot into the bottom corner to give the Limavady keeper no chance. Half time Crusaders 2 - 1 Limavady United Stephen McBride had the Crues first chance of the 2nd half. He was put through by a fine Rainey pass but his attempt was blocked away for a corner. The corner was played in and from close range Morrow saw his header bounce back off the crossbar. The ball rebounded out as far as Gary Smyth who headed it goal wards but his header also bounced away off the bar. Later a free kick was pumped in and fell to Eamon Doherty who cracked the ball from a good 25 yards to force the Limavady keeper to make a good save low at his right post. For big parts of the 2nd half most entertainment was to be had from the "Rising Son of Limavady" beating the **** out of his drum. In the dying minutes Crusaders as many chances as they had the rest of the half. Rainey was put clear by a good pass and must have had thoughts of his first hat trick of the season but his first touch was off his knee and the ball beat him to the goal line. In injury time Morrow hit a wicked dipping shot but it didn't come down in time. Davy Rainey was named man of the match this week sponsored by Norman Coleman.
