Crusaders Newtownabbey Strikers v Y.M.C.A.

Wednesday 28th April 2010

Crusaders Newtownabbey Strikers faced a tough home game on April 28th in which they eventually defeated YMCA by 2 goals to nil, both goals coming in the second half courtesy of Roisin McFeely (56') from a delightful shot from outside the box and Danielle McDowell (86') who latched quickly onto a defensive error by YMCA. In all, Strikers had 12 shots on target over the course of the match, they retained most of the possession and their trademark pattern of building possession from the back was again to the fore.

That said, the half-time score of 0-0 was attributable in no small measure to stalwart defensive play by YMCA's centre halves Chloe Archibald and Tasmin McCarter while their front line was led admirably by Avilla Bergin. Bergin’s departure from the field of play due to injury late in the second half was undoubtedly a blow for YMCA. Strikers had one late change to the starting line up when McFeely replaced injured captain, Nadine Murphy, while
the performances of substitutes Rebecca Corish (for Steff Dickinson on 64') and Emma Murray (for Claire Carson on 77') shows the strength in depth that is beginning to emerge in their squad.

The small home supporters contingent were treated yet again to a skillful display by left midfielder Nicole Connolly while on the other side of the pitch, Lynsey Patterson displayed a much more forceful performance in generating a number of crosses and creating her own chances. Defensively, Strikers were tested no more than twice over the course of the 90 minutes, all of which bodes well for their next competitive fixture away to Cliftonville Ladies who currently lie at the bottom of the Premier table. Kick off - 7pm.
