CIS Group Match

Donegal Celtic v Crusaders 11/8/07

A glorious sunny day, an exciting game, a Crues victory. Well two out of three isn't bad. In continuous heavy rain Crusaders got the season off to the worst possible start by conceding a goal after 30 seconds. (against the run of play!!). A low shot was parried by Crues 'keeper Gregg Shannon and was picked up on the left of the box crossed in and hit low past Shannon by D.C.'s McDonald. It didn't take long though for Crusaders to get on level terms. Davy Rainey put Darren Lockhart through on the D.C. 'keeper. Lockhart kept cool and deftly lobbed the advancing 'keeper. Both teams made light of the difficult conditions and treated the good numbers of hardy souls to a good standard of football. Things got better for Crusaders when Ryan Tumelty finished off a good move by coolly slipping the ball into the left corner of the net when one on one with the 'keeper. At this stage Crusaders had the lions share of possession and created a couple of decent chances. Davy Larmour and a shot palmed down by the 'keeper and Rainey, after a run across the edge of the penalty box had a shot just wide. It looked like Crusaders would head off into the half time break in front when a Davy Munster (D.C.) header rebounded off the crossbar and deflected into the net off a Crues defender. I am much too polite to name names. (That and the fact it was hard to see from the portaloo).

Half Time   Donegal Celtic 2-2 Crusaders

The second half was 12 minutes old when Alain Emerson was fouled on the edge of the D.C. box. Rainey stepped up and hit the free kick low and hard into the right corner to restore the Crues lead. The lead only lasted 3 minutes. D.C. got a corner on the left ans swung it in. Shannon came and punched only to see the ball bounce of a head and back into the net. Crues fans were starting to get the feeling it wasn't going to their day. D.C. by now were enjoying more of the ball and pressed forward putting the Crues defence under pressure. With 7 minutes to go and most fans thinking of a hot bath Rainey turned a defender in the box and was brought down. The ref had no hesitation in awarding the penalty. Barry Spence made no mistake from the spot. D.C. could have taken a share of the points but for a brilliant save by Shannon who tipped a goal bound shot by Armstrong round the post. The final whistle blew soon after and the sodden fans trooped home having watched a terrific game and great result and the prospect of a nice hot bath and a chance to wring out the underpants.
