Crusaders v Cliftonville 18/08/07

Report by Graeme Walsh

Another wet Saturday for the Crues but this week the order of the day was
tears of despair rather than joy. The game started brightly enough with some nice football
from the red and black army but no real chances created in the final third of the pitch.
Cliftonville took the lead on 18 minutes when Chris Scannell's long range shot deflected off Eamonn Doherty After the Crues piled on some pressure they levelled matters seven minutes later with a sweet strike from Stephen Shaw. Davy Larmour was then forced to leave the action due to leg injury and he was replaced by  Steven Coulter. A second
deflection swung the game in the Reds' direction on 38 minutes when Mark Holland's shot
ricocheted off Andy Hunter and past the stretching Gregg Shannon.

HALF TIME:   Crusaders 1  Cliftonville 2

While the Crues lost their cohesion after the break Cliftonville stepped up
a gear and after a period of pressure Kieran O'Connor stabbed the ball home on 60 minutes to
extend the lead. After Holland out jumped the Crusaders defence to head in his second of the day in the 71st minute, the home side made a double substitution to provide fresh legs as they fought to get back in the game. Johnny Tumelty replaced Alain
Emerson and Eamonn McAllister came on for Stephen Shaw. It was  Tumelty who almost
got a goal back for Crusaders in the 83rd minute, but after the Cliftonville keeper
parried his venomous shot none of the attacking players could reach the loose ball before it was cleared. But for a superb save from Shannon in the last minute the deficit might have been worse and while the Hatchetmen trooped off to some staunch applause from the faithful they will want to forget this metaphorical bloody nose suffered in their own back yard.

Team

1:Shannon; 2:Spence; 3:McBride; 4:Magowan; 5:Hunter; 6:Doherty; 7:Shaw (McAllister 72); 8:Lockhart; 9:Rainey; 10:Larmour (Coulter 30); 11:Emerson (J Tumelty 72)
