Crusaders tonight went through to the Quarter Finals of The BetMcLean.com League Cup with a 4-1 win over Limavady United at the Limavady Showgrounds.
Crusaders got off to the best possible start when a superb Harry Robinson cross was met by Colin Coates who scored at the back post from two yards out after 6 minutes. Crusaders went for the jugular and looked threatening every time they came forward. David Cushley went close twice in a minute while Jamie McGonigle controlled brilliantly with his chest before volleying just over. On 20 minutes it was 2-0. David Cushley won a corner with a deflected shot and whenthe corner came in the ball fell nicely in his path and he scored from a tight angle sitting on the ground. Limavady tried to get back quickly but missed and within a minute Crusaders where 3-0 up when Jamie MvGonigle rifled a super shot into the roof of the net from 25 yards. Crusaders where in total control the rest of the half and the closest either side came to scoring again was a Sean Ward shot that went wide after he had cut in from the wing.
The second half started with Limavady United pulling a goal back two minutes in when Ryan Doherty scored after Sean O'Neill had saved the first effort. This only stirred Crusaders in to action again and they went 4-1 up on 53 minutes when Paul McElroy back heeled into the United net. Sean Ward cross come shot came off the bar and away to safety before a tame Jamie MvGonigle header did not trouble. Sean O'Neill did well to punch a United corner away while a United free kick sailed over the bar from a good position. Jamie McGonigle deserved a goal after great run but his shot was pushed wide of the United net for a corner. David Cushley had the ball in the net with an overhead kick from a brilliant build but he was slightly offside and the goal didn't count. As the game played out Kyle Owens did well in defence and Sean 'Oneill made a great save with his legs and with little injury time referee Evan Boyce blew up and Crusaders where through.
So safely in the Quarters attention again turns to the Danske Bank Premiership and the visit to Ballymena Showgrounds to play Ballymena United this Saturday (3pm) Thanks to everyone who travelled to Limavady this evening and your support was appreciated on such a poor evening.
